This weekend I will be finishing the Vice docuseries on Sherry Shriner. If you are not familiar with Shriner, she entered mainstream media when one of her followers was murdered by his girlfriend. While officials were investigating the case, they and the press learned that the couple was emotionally tormented by their former cult leader Sherry Shriner. It is currently streaming on Hulu, but it is only available until next Wednesday. So, if you plan to watch it with me, don’t hesitate. Just in case you miss the series, I will be covering the UFO/doomsday cult on TikTok.

A few people have asked me to cover Yahweh Ben Yahweh on TikTok. I am excited about the prospect because I am from South Florida and love researching Black cult leaders. I was doing some preliminary research on him and came across this article, published shortly after his death. Full disclosure, the article was published in 2007 and does not appear to have been updated recently. The piece provides a great deal of history into who Yahweh was and just how powerful he became in Miami. What I love most is the mini-deep dive into Yahweh’s teachings, which allegedly are largely a rip-off of the Nation of Islam. I guessed as much when I first learned about him but I live for evidence.
P.S.
This week paid subscribers read about conspirituality, which is the overlap between liberal wellness movements and right-wing conspiracy groups. In the piece, I discuss one of the first scholarly articles published on the subject and how the author’s predictions did not come true. The author’s believed that conspirituality would remain a private endeavor between its followers, but they could not have predicted the power of social media or Trump’s presidency (a hugely influential conspiracy theorist). This post definitely inspired my decision to cover Sherry Shriner and her reptilian conspiracy cult.
