Read
This week I read about the Sarah Lawrence cult trial. I had not heard anything about this trial or the actual cult until this week. Apparently, Lawrence Ray moved into his daughter’s dorm at Sarah Lawrence College and began manipulating undergraduates. Some eventually moved in with him, severed ties with their parents, and suffered a decade of abuse. According to his defense attorney, “The world that Larry and the others cultivated over the course of a decade may not be one that you or I could ever understand.” I am still learning the details of the case, but so far it is quite a ride.
Heard
I listened to the Cults by Parcast episode on the Source Family (again). Cults by Parcast is one of my favorite shows because of their in-depth research and overall production. I am a very picky podcaster-listener and they offer the perfect balance of light sound effects and well researched information. I am still conducting research on the Source Family for my own series and wanted to cross-check some information I learned about the group. I highly recommend the episode to anyone interested in cults x counterculture x veganism.
P.S.
I also learned about Devil in Ohio, a new Netflix series about satanic cults and a tense friendship between two teenagers. Apparently there are only eight episodes, and as the world’s worst binge-watcher I am pleased. I can’t watch more than three episodes of the same show in a row.
